Life and Experiences

Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself? Some fun facts and anecdotes from your life.

When I went to school, and still even when I was studying in university, my dream was to become a foreign correspondent in France. I lived in Finland, studied journalism, and had taken a few French courses, so the dream was not completely unrealistic, but my career unfolded a bit differently when I started working in magazine publishing.

However, now I’m living a life quite close to that dream: life brought me to French-speaking Switzerland, and I’m writing and interpreting interesting phenomena for a living, so the essential elements of that dream did come true. The form is just a little bit different from what I imagined, as it often is.

Where are you from originally? What are some of your favorite memories as a child?

I was born and grew up in Finland, Northern Europe, in the middle of the Finnish countryside. Growing up I couldn’t wait to be old enough to move on my own and live in the city but now when I’m approaching my 40’s I find myself living in a small town again - not at all far from the countryside. While I do miss bigger cities every now and then, as a busy mom and entrepreneur I do appreciate the uncomplicated logistics of small-town living.

As a child, I was really excited about snow and sledging, but I come from a region that is very “flat” so I wasn’t a talented downhill skier. To be honest, I was even quite afraid of the speed of downhill skiing! Now, living surrounded by the Alps, I’ve found my way on the slopes as well, and skiing is one of our favorite hobbies in the winter season.

What do you do to relax? Any therapy you would like to share?

I believe that this is a challenge many ambitious professionals and entrepreneurs share: it’s hard to find enough time for self-care and relaxing while juggling all the other things in life as well.

Walking is my go-to way to relax. If I’m feeling up for it, I like to listen to audiobooks and learn new things while I walk, but sometimes it’s nice to just enjoy the scenery and let the mind wonder.

Making time for yoga and meditation are also great ways to relax - even though finding that time sometimes feels more like a chore than a precious “me moment”. When done regularly, they do wonders and also improve creativity, which is a great bonus for someone who writes for a living :)

Often people find inspiration from great thinkers, writers and prolific people in history. What is your favorite quote and why is that quote noteworthy?

I love this quote from writer Anne Lamott: “Perfectionamis is based on the obsessive belief that if you run carefully enough, hitting each stepping-stone just right, you won’t have to die.”

She’s a wonderful writer, and I’ve especially enjoyed her writing guide “Bird by Bird”. Like this quote, her writing shows us how much writing and life actually have in common, and how many of our worries actually revolve around much bigger questions. At the same time, there is much comfort in her words. Whenever I’m struggling with writing or work, I read a few pages of Anne Lamott.

Professional Career

Can you briefly share your professional journey?

As I mentioned above, I started my professional career as a magazine journalist dreaming of the work of a foreign correspondent. I loved digging up new phenomena and interesting stories - and the act of writing gave me great pleasure. Writing was, and still is, where I feel at home.

However, when my life took a turn towards Switzerland, working as a journalist didn’t seem like a viable career option, and I ended up in a local communication agency. It was a great lesson in the strategy behind communication, content, and PR, and the experience allowed me to see a different side of the picture.

When my daughter was born, however, I didn’t see myself going back to the hectic agency world, and that’s when I decided to take the plunge and start my own communications and content agency working with small and medium-sized businesses. This job gives me the perfect chance to combine my love for writing with the strategy experience, in a meaningful way that’s making a difference.

Can you share some of the interesting projects you are working on these days?

I’m currently working on some new workshops and training, in the hopes of spreading the word about effective communication and creating high-quality content even further. The first one is just about to launch - and there will be exciting new additions coming next year.

The idea of workshops and training came from my clients (as the best ideas often do!). Many small businesses have a lot of talent in-house, and employees are also keen to share their knowledge and insights through communication. However, they might lack time and feel uncomfortable, not being trained writers.

Workshops and training allow them to gain confidence and develop their skills and strengthen the overall communication of the company in an authentic way.

Tell us about Pauliina Rasi Communications and your role as a CEO and founder.

Starting my own business was never on my bucket list, but in hindsight, it does seem like the obvious next step on my career path. When I started my company, my main motivation was to be able to keep doing what I loved in a more flexible way around my young family, but it turned out to be so much more!
Rather early on in my entrepreneurial journey, I got to work with SMEs and growth businesses with great ambitions and missions to accomplish. I rather soon decided to focus mainly on helping them set up their content strategy, create quality content and also develop their skills in content creation and communication.

Leadership Advice

What advice would you give to anyone seeking a career in your industry?

Communication is such a fascinating, dynamic industry, changing all the time, which makes it an ideal place to be for people who enjoy learning new things. At the same time, it’s a coveted field - and in a way, anyone can be or claim to be an expert in communication.

To succeed, I find it important to keep developing one’s skills on an ongoing basis and also look to specialize in something that you feel very passionate about. Having an overall understanding of the field is naturally important, but only specialization and continuous learning will help to get on the top (and stay there).

That being said, as an entrepreneur I’ve learned we’re never ready and we can always pivot and make different choices if things don’t turn out the way we were expecting. That’s part of what makes things so exciting!
